HEY! I FOUND A VIOLIN THAT'S A REALLY GOOD
Think you've found a violin on the web that’s a really good buy? We've
noticed that even our neighbors with the bull's eye logo are selling a children
violin for under $100.00. Let's take a look and see if that and other violins are really such a good buy.
What do you need for a violin to work well?
First, the right size. For a child, there are several sizes (Check out our Sizing Guide). If you
are an adult over 5 feet-2 inches, a full size violin would be right for you.
Next, consider the set up: Good strings, pegs that fit, fine tuners for a beginner,
the sound post fits and is in the right place, the fingerboard is properly planed,
and the nut is properly adjusted.
Then, take a look at the bow. Wood, fiberglass, or carbon fiber. For a beginner,
any of those three will work just fine. But good horsehair with proper weight
and strength are essential!
So what do you get with those incredible web buys for $100 or $150?
Set up - strings so lousy you can't tune them to pitch, pegs that don't
fit, sound post out of whack, bridge not even set up, fine tuners that don't
work, strings spaced unevenly, and a fingerboard with more bumps than a St. Paul
street in winter. They send you the violin with the bridge down. Maybe because
they never put it up in the first place. If they did, how come they couldn't
see that the bridge didn't fit?
And the bow? Often, it's a wood bow made so cheaply that the horse hair won't
grab a string and it's so warped you can't possibly bow straight when
playing.
You will find the Amati
violins that we sell to be far, far different from other inexpensive violins.
The set up is great, the strings hold their tune, and the bow works like it should.
In short, you can actually play the Amati violins, unlike most of
the “good buy” violins you will find on the web. Yes, they cost slightly
more. That’s the cost that it takes to make and properly set up a violin.
So, are those other violins a good buy or good-bye money?
